This kickstand increases Steam Deck’s functionality

This kickstand significantly improves how the Steam Deck functions.

My hands start to hurt when I use a controller for too long. My hands experience discomfort at first, followed by tingling as if they have slept off. I believed the Steam Deck would be completely off-limits, like how I feel the same way about my phone, a thin controller, and the Nintendo Switch. I could see that its size and weight would be a significant problem without even holding one.

At least the Switch features a kickstand, which solves the weight issue for those with hand issues. The Steam Deck, however, does not. Until recently, I had trouble playing it comfortably until I discovered the one piece of equipment that every owner of a Steam Deck must have: the Deckmate kickstand. It is a component of a robust and modular system that offers numerous mounting and add-on choices.

The kickstand itself is strong, attached to the Steam Deck with what’s called the Deckmate Grip. This plastic claw snaps into the bottom of the portable console and the air vents (without obstructing them!). It won’t move at all.

Given the size of the Steam Deck, the Deckmate kickstand is incredibly straightforward yet a need nonetheless. I can set the Steam Deck down on an end table when playing from the sofa to take rests during cutscenes, but it’s also much more comfortable to have it sit on a table while actively playing. The Steam Deck can also be set up on a table with a different controller. The kickstand on the Steam Deck prevents it from fitting into its carrying bag, which is the sole drawback. (Despite that, the plastic claw is the only thing that works.)

Deckmate is a modular system, so there are additional add-ons you can stow in the grip, including a VESA mount, a wall mount, and a universal adapter—helpful in attaching a battery pack.

The system’s total cost is $49, although alternative packages combine particular accessories with the required grip. The other items range in price from $30 to $40, with the kickstand combo costing $35. You may easily download the files and create the accessories yourself if you have a 3D printer. There are choices to pay what you can, but that is free.
